Turn your solar production into additional income. Earn $0.025 - $0.040 per megawatt-hour on top of your electricity savings.
Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) are tradable certificates that represent the environmental benefits of solar energy generation. In Pennsylvania, you earn one SREC for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (1 megawatt-hour) your solar system produces.
A 10 kW solar system produces 12,000 kWh per year
→ That’s 12 SRECs annually
→ At current prices ($0.025 - $0.040 per SREC), that’s $300-480 in extra annual income
This is on top of the ~$2,064 you save from not buying electricity from West Penn Power (12,000 kWh x $$0.172/kWh)
Your solar panels generate clean electricity, which is tracked by your system’s monitoring.
For every 1,000 kWh (1 MWh) produced, one SREC is automatically created in your account.
Pennsylvania utilities are required by law (AEPS) to purchase SRECs to meet their solar quota.
You sell your SRECs through an aggregator or broker, receiving payment typically quarterly.
Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard (AEPS) requires electricity suppliers to source 0.5% of their power from solar. Utilities buy SRECs from homeowners like you to meet this requirement. If they don’t comply, they face steep penalties – so your SRECs have guaranteed value.
| System Size | Annual Production | SRECs/Year | Annual SREC Income |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kW | 6,000 kWh | 6 SRECs | $150 – $240 |
| 10 kW | 12,000 kWh | 12 SRECs | $300 – $480 |
| 15 kW | 18,000 kWh | 18 SRECs | $450 – $720 |
| 21.8 kW (Our system) | 26,000 kWh | 26 SRECs | $650 – $1,040 |
When we install your system, we’ll guide you through the SREC registration process. Here’s what’s involved:
Your system is registered with the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and assigned a unique identification number.
A revenue-grade production meter is required for SREC certification (~$900 for equipment). We’ll help you source and install the ACTL-0750 current transformers and WND-WR-MB-OS meter needed for accurate production tracking.
We’ll help you create an account in the Generation Attribute Tracking System (GATS), which tracks your solar production and creates SRECs.
Partner with an SREC aggregator or broker (like SRECTrade, Knollwood Energy, or Sol Systems) who will sell your SRECs to utilities on your behalf.
Once registered, SRECs are automatically generated as your system produces. Most aggregators pay quarterly.
SRECs in Pennsylvania expire after 3 years. This gives you flexibility to sell when prices are favorable.
SREC registration itself is free. Aggregators typically take a small commission (5-10%) when they sell your credits. The only upfront cost is the certified meter equipment (~$900).
Only solar systems physically located in Pennsylvania can generate PA SRECs.
SREC eligibility requires a realtime certified revenue-grade meter for production tracking. Equipment cost is approximately $900.
