The story: Even with solar + 31kWh batteries for 2 years, we still paid $500+/month on average because excess solar went to waste (red) without net metering. Once net metering was activated (Feb 2026), our bills dropped dramatically: $172 → $189 → $0 in April (with a $73.69 credit balance!), then just $12.67 in May and $16.36 in June – while our banked net-metering credit grew to 1,666 kWh, rolling forward to offset winter bills. Longer summer days send far more excess solar to the grid for credit than we use.

Why We Share This

Most solar companies show you projections and promises. We show you actual performance. This is what solar looks like day-to-day in Bedford County:

  • How production varies with weather and seasons
  • Real electricity cost savings vs. West Penn Power rates
  • System reliability and uptime
  • Actual vs. projected performance

Actual monthly savings vs. what you’d pay West Penn Power without solar:

Note: Current calculations use West Penn Power’s current Price to Compare (12.08¢/kWh) plus fees.

About Our Monitoring Setup

Our system uses Home Assistant for data collection and Grafana for visualization. This gives us:

  • Real-time production data: See generation every second
  • Historical analysis: Compare performance over days, months, and years
  • Cost calculations: Automatic savings tracking based on current utility rates
  • System health monitoring: Alerts if production drops unexpectedly
  • Weather correlation: Understand how clouds, seasons affect output

Note: This advanced monitoring setup is custom to our system and is not typically what most customers have. It’s also not included in automated quotes. Most solar systems come with standard inverter monitoring that shows production and basic statistics. However, if you’re interested in this level of detailed monitoring, we can discuss options to set it up for your system.
